Food safety supervisor certificate renewal: what to check

For businesses covered by Standard 3.2.2A, FSANZ says the appointed supervisor's certificate must have been obtained within the past five years. Check an earlier printed expiry too. This requirement is separate from a training provider's statement that a qualification itself does not expire.

NSW operates its own Food Safety Supervisor certificate scheme: NSW FSS certificates last five years, and the authority provides renewal and approved-provider instructions. Check those instructions when arranging a NSW renewal. Do not assume a course advertised for another state meets NSW requirements.

For another state or territory, check recognition with the relevant regulator or council and retain the answer with your certificate record. The ProCafe register includes a recognition note so the basis for your choice stays visible.

FSANZ also requires a covered business to appoint the supervisor and ensure they are reasonably available to advise and supervise food handlers. Keep a practical record of the appointment and availability arrangements, and review it when staffing or operating hours change.

Use one entry per supervisor, certificate and location. Record a correction when details change so an older entry remains understandable.
