New Zealand: before you start

Build your routines around the food control plan or national programme that applies to your New Zealand business. For cafes using MPI's Simply Safe & Suitable template, the selected cards and your registered activities determine the work. Keep the completed checks and supporting methods ready for your verifier.

  1. Use the plan's instructions for what to do when something goes wrong. Identify the food, activity and timing before recording the immediate containment step.
  2. Keep a refused delivery distinguishable from food already prepared or served. Document the action on the food as well as repairs, cleaning or staff retraining.
  3. Retain the follow-up and any verifier or regulator correspondence. Review whether the incident means a method or selected plan card needs to change.

Incidents & accidents

  1. Anyone on the team can report an incident from their phone while the details are fresh.
  2. Attach the actions you took as you take them.
  3. A manager reviews and closes it with a note — the full record is kept.

Accidents that may be potentially notifiable to WorkSafe New Zealand can be flagged for follow-up. Reporting to the authorities remains your responsibility.

Refusals log

Record refused service or entry — what happened, who dealt with it, what was done — so there's a dated record rather than a memory. Sensitive entries can be marked manager-only.
